Let's Say Goodbye to Stress!

As the days grow shorter and colder coupled with the rush of the season, many of us find ourselves feeling overwhelmed. Stress creates an internal toxin that rakes havoc on our health!  Unfortunately, in this day and age many of us are so stressed that we have actually accepted this unhealthy state as normal!  

We know that the three causes of subluxation of the spine (misalignment that we seek to correct chiropractically) are the "Three T’s": trauma, thoughts and toxins.  Trauma is pretty straight forward and easy enough to understand.  Also toxins from chemical substances that we ingest, inhale or absorb from our environment are easy enough to understand as detrimental.  Did you know thoughts, both positive and negative, can invoke a reaction in our bodies?  Negative thoughts that are often the result of stress in our lives, become an internal toxin by evoking actual chemical changes in the body.  The amazing body designed these changes as a means of survival in order to allow our brain to focus on coping with the stress at hand; but in doing so, puts many other important jobs of the body "on hold".  This is intended to be a temporary fix, not the chronic state that many of us live with as a "new" normal.

Let's focus on lessening stress so that you can thrive and not simply survive!

  • Learn how to meditate!  Try to spend at least 15 minutes a day in silence with a clear mind.  If you don't have 15 minutes, wake up early!!
  • Be grateful. Focus on things that you actually have control over and work on letting worries that you cannot impact go. Easier said than done, but here's an exercise -- write down 5 things every day that are good and positive.  These things can be as simple as the sun came out, someone smiled at me, my child said "I love you" to learning a new skill or meeting a new friend.  Re-train your brain to focus on the positive and you will be amazed at how quickly your energy changes!
  • Exercise!  Create some endorphins in your body -- the same chemicals invoked by good thoughts!!  Even if you only have 15 minutes and can't leave the house -- Do some star jumps, walk briskly around the outside of your house, throw the ball for your dog.  Just get moving!! 
  • Eat fruits and vegetables!!  Give your brain and your cells some nourishment!!  You need to rely on that nervous system -- feed it!!  Plus fruits and veggies help our body become more alkaline, which reduces inflammation, which is often worsened by stress!!
  • Drink some water.  A dry brain is like a dry sponge -- moist is better!!
  • GET A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT!!!  Getting adjusted helps restore not only motion but nervous system input throughout your entire body.  It also helps the body release toxins, even those pesky stress hormones!

Dr. O’Connell received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic. He has a BS in Applied Exercise Science from Springfield College and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  This knowledge base served him as the president of the Sport’s Council while at Palmer College where he also pursued numerous athletic and academic learning opportunities.  Dr. O’Connell was also the recipient of the prestigious Clinical Excellence Award.

 

Prior to Chiropractic school, Dr. O’Connell worked as a Health and Wellness Coordinator for Verizon Wirelesses’ corporate office in Tampa, Florida. During that time, he helped members obtain better health through proper diet, exercise, and lifestyle coaching.

 

Dr. O’Connell’s focus in practice is to offer evidence-guided excellence in patient care. In order to better serve, he plans on working towards additional certifications in neurology, nutrition, rehabilitation, and sports injury. In his personal time, Dr. O’Connell enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, hiking, and exploring New England.

 

Dr. O’Connell is currently accepting new patients and will be working towards the seamless transition of patient care from Dr. Jonathan O’Malley, who has decided to return to his home in Newcastle, England.
